I have finally made my first crochet pattern! A crochet frog bucket hat with a ruffled brim.
This bucket hat is worked around in a spiral from the crown to the brim and is super easy to create, or customize. I used various types of yarn I had on hand to make this, and used stitch markers to keep track of my rounds.
Things you will need:
90g worsted weight yarn (green)
Other yarns (for eyes/face and edge of brim)
- bright green, black, white, yellow, pink
Fiber fill (for eyes)
4.25mm hook
Yarn needle
Scissors
Stitch markers
Gauge:
Crown diameter - 6"
Crown height - 3"
Brim width - 2"
Hat circumference - 21"
Abbreviations:
st(s) - stitch(es)
MC - magic circle
ch - chain
hdc - half double crochet
inc - 2 hdc in 1 st space
BLO - back loop only
FLO - front loop only

Round 23: In FLO, 2 hdc in each st around (160 sts)
Rounds 24-25: 1 dc in each st around until brim length is reached (160 sts)
Round 26: 1 sc in each st around (160 sts) - this round is bright green on my hat
Fasten off/weave in ends
Eyes
Starting with black: MC, ch 1
Round 1: 4 sc into MC (4 sts)
Round 2: inc in each st around (8 sts), switch colors (yellow) on the last stitch of this row
Round 3: sc into each st around (8 sts), switch colors
Round 4: 2 sc in each st around (16 sts) For this, the white I used was a more fine yarn so this may be different depending on is used
Fasten off
For the back of the eyes, I attached the main color of the hat to the eye and worked a dc into each stitch across the eye, working in rows (3 rows total) until the back of the eye is the same size as the front of the eye.
From here, I lightly stuffed the eyes with fiber fill and sewed them onto the hat with the main hat color.
For the bright green on the eyes, I attached the yarn to the outer edge of each eye and then worked 2 chains before sc in each st on the top of the eye.
Face
Blush (pink): MC, ch 1
Round 1: 4 sc into MC (4 sts)
Round 2: inc in each st around (8 sts)
I added a couple extra stitches here (10 total) so make the circle as big or as small as you would like 😊
For the mouth, create a fly stitch using a yarn needle and black worsted yarn.
I really enjoyed making this hat and I thought it would be good practice to try and write a pattern, before I get back into bikinis (or whatever else I choose to make lol). The eyes were kind of experimental and took me a couple of tries to get right, so the pattern for that section is a bit lacking. I plan to use this pattern to make a few other bucket hats too so look out for those as well on my Instagram @artbynicolegriffin
If anyone tries this pattern, let me know how it goes or ask if you have any questions! <3
Check out the other bucket hats I've made!

I also decided to include a PDF version of the pattern here:

Edit: I wanted to share a photo of a recreation of the frog bucket hat someone had posted on Pinterest, but couldn't comment. Here it is! Thank you to everyone who has used my pattern <3
Hi, I would like to make the frog floppy hat but what size is it? Baby? Child? or Adult?
